1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar



Unlike the 1889-CC Morgan Silver Dollar, the 1889-O Morgan Dollar had an okay strike and there are plenty of them to go around with 11,875,000 minted. It is very common to find uncirculated coins, but higher grades are rare to find. There are many wanted VAMs for this year. The first is VAM-1A, where there strong clashing on both the front and back of the coin. It is very rare find, making it very valuable. The next are VAM-2 and VAM-2A; both have an oval mintmark and a far date, but VAM-2A also has a chip on the first 8 in the date. The last is VAM-6, which is a doubled date where 1 and 8 strongly doubled and the 9 is slightly doubled. In uncirculated condition the 1889-O Dollar is worth from about $150 as MS-60 to almost $20,000 in MS-66.

The 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar was the twelfth year the Morgan Dollar was made. It was minted in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City. The mintages for this year are:

Philadelphia-21,726,811

Carson City-350,000

New Orleans-11,875,000

San Francisco-700,000

There were no special production or error coins in this year. The 1889-CC in MS-67 condition can be worth up to $500,000 and it is also one the rarest Morgan Dollars.
