The 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar was the first Morgan Dollar to ever be minted. This year in the set had many different varieties. This includes the 8 tail feathers variety, the 7 tail feathers variety which have very low mintages (750,000 and 416,000). Also is the 1878 with the reverse of 1879. The 7 over 8 tail feathers variety is another. 9,774,000 were minted in San Francisco and 2,212,000 were minted in Carson City. Depending on the condition and the variety, these coins range from around $18 up to $45,000 according to PCGS.
