The 1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the more interesting coins in the Morgan Dollar set. Uncirculated coins are no rarity for this year being minted 12,150,000, but the standards of the coins stink. The strike is weak and the luster is not so lusterous. But, there is hope for this coin, the VAM varieties. There are many different VAMs that deal with the oval O type mintmark, but those are not a really big deal. The most popular is VAM-1B, also known as the Scar Face. The 1888-O Scarface Morgan Dollar has many die breaks in it, but it gets its name from the huge die break across Lady Liberty's cheek. The 1888-O Scarface is not only desirable, but also valuable, being able to sell for up to $10,000 for an MS-64. Other wanted VAMs include VAM-1A (imprinted E on the reverse and die break in the R of PLURIBUS), VAM-4 (referred to as "hot lips" where the lips, chin, and nose have been doubled), and VAM-9 (some arrows on the reverse are doubled). The 1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar has extremely low value of only around $30 in MS-60, but close to $2,500 as an MS-66.
