1887-S Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1887-S Morgan Dollar is a semi-key date of the series. At a mintage of 1,771,000, the 1887-S can be difficult to find at times. The strike of the coin is very strong with a nice luster on most of the coins. VAM-2 is often popular for the 1887-S, which is a doubled S mintmark. One question asked about the Morgan Dollar series is: Can there be a 1887/6-S? There could be given that both of the other mints had the overdate. The 1887-S Dollar is worth a bit more than other Morgans, around a $100 at MS-60 and close to $10,000 at MS-66.

1887-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Although minted 11,550,000 times the 1887-O Morgan Dollar is a rare find in the uncirculated Mint state condition. The coin has a very popular overdate like the 1887/6 Morgan Dollar, which is the 1887/6-O Morgan Silver Dollar, a.k.a. VAM-3, with a mintage that is really unknown, but one can assume it was less the amount minted as just 1887/6 because the value is much higher. There is also VAM-2, which deals with a doubled 1 and a tripled 7 in the date. Other popular ones are VAM-5, where some of the stars near the date have been doubled, and VAM-22A, where the die is pitted below the eagle's tail and the obverse has a little bit of doubling in some spots. The 1887-O Morgan Silver Dollar can be worth from close to $30 in MS-60 to around $30,000 in MS-68. The 1887/6-O Morgan is worth close to $40,000 in MS-65.
