1885-S Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1885-S Morgan Dollar can be a scarce coin to get a hold of at times. It is not considered a rare coin with a mintage of 1,497,000. Coins are harder to find in the higher grades like MS-65+ and spike dramatically in price. A lot of the 1885-S Morgan Silver Dollars have weak strikes, especially in the center of both the obverse and the reverse.Two VAMs of interest were minted in this year, being VAM-6 and VAM-9. VAM-6 is a coin where the S is very noticeably punched over slightly to the right by a bigger mintmark and VAM-9 is S/S like VAM-6, but it has the tops of 885 shown in the denticles and it is very rare. The 1885-S Morgan is near $200 as MS-60 and then around $32,000 at MS-67.

1885-O Morgan Dollars are just another common year of the Morgan Dollar series. The mintage of this year is about average at 9,185,000 coins. Some coins are weak in the center while others have very good strikes. There are a lot of choices out there, so look around and get a high quality one. The 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar in MS-60 is in the $30 to $40 range and the higher grades like MS-67 and MS-68 are around $2,000.

The 1885-CC Morgan Dollar is known as the rarest of the Morgan Dollar series in lower than Mint State grade. This Key Date Morgan was minted as only 228,000 coins, with over half of them released in the later years of the 20th century, but almost none of them were actually distributed around 1885, being stored instead. While most 1885-CC Morgan Silver Dollars have nice strikes, some strikes are on the weaker side, so you have to watch out for them. In addition to a low mintage, the 1885-CC Morgan had only 4 VAM die variations, none of which are wanted badly by collectors. The 1885 Morgan is valued at around $700 as MS-60 jumping to around $45,000 as an MS-68.
