1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1881-S Morgan Dollar is very easily found having a mintage of 12,760,000 coins, the highest of any year minted in San Francisco. Many of these coins (around half) are in Mint condition meaning their grade is MS-60+. These coins are found good quality with strong strikes. An MS-60 goes around $30 to $40 and MS-69 is worth around $40,000. Although close to 160 obverse and reverse dies were used to mint the coins, there no VAMs or special die varieties for this year.

1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar



To make the 1881-O Morgan Dollar, almost 100 total obverse and reverse dies were sent to the New Orleans Mint. There was 5,708,000 coins struck for this year and they are easy to come by in AU condition. However, finding a high grade 1881-O Morgan might be a more challenging task. In lower grades like MS-60, the 1881-O is worth around $30 to $40, but do to the rarity of higher grades, an MS-66 can get about $20,000.

1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most collector-wanted Morgan Dollars in the series. With a mintage of 296,000, it is not very easy to come by in higher grades. Although there are no special die varieties that come with this year, having one in higher grade is special enough. While an MS-60 can grab from $500 to $600, the rare grades like MS-68 to MS-70 will go for $30,000+.

The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar has 9,163,000 circulation coins minted along with 984 proof coins made using almost 60 obverse dies and close to 50 reverse dies. Because of the mass amount of coins from this year minted, the value has suffered. Coins in MS-60 condition can be valued at the $30-$40 range and MS-67 or higher coins are worth $10,000+. Proof coins are of higher value with PF-66 to PF-68 coins worth $10,000 to around $30,000 based on condition.

The 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar was the fourth date released in the Morgan Silver Dollar set. At Philadelphia, it had a mintage of 9,163,975, it had a mintage of 206,000 at Carson City, New Orleans had minted 5,708,000, and San Francisco minted 12,760,000. Although there were no errors in this year, the Carson City variety is worth a pretty penny even in good condition, starting at about $400. The 1881-O can be worth up to $20,000 as a MS-66.
