1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1879-S Reverse of 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar was one of two varieties of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar. The Reverse of 1878 has a flat breast and the parallel feathers on the arrow which the eagle holds. Although there were around 500,000 coins minted, they are now somewhat difficult to come by due to the amount of them that were melted. Coins in MS-60 condition can go for about $90 and the very rare MS-66 1879-S Morgan Dollar can fetch $39,000+.

The 1879-S Reverse of 1879 Morgan Dollar is usually found very well struck on both the back and front, eye catching, and having a lot of luster to it. The 1879 Reverse has the nonparallel arrow feathers and the rounder eagle's breast. It had mintage of 8,600,000, many of which are still in Mint condition. Unfortunately, the 1879-S Morgan is not worth all that much, ranging from less than $40 in MS-60 to only $1,000+ in MS-67 or higher.

1879-O Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1879-O Morgan Silver Dollar is rarely found in MS-65 or higher condition. The special die variety of the 1879-O is the "O over Horizontal O" also known as the VAM-4 variety. The coin had 2,887,000 circulation strikes and no proofs. These coins are often found in AU conditions rather that MS condition and many are found with numerous bag marks. In MS-60, the coin is worth about $80 and in MS-66 it's said to be valued at around $18,000.

1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is the first key date minted among all the Morgan Dollars. It is also considered the second rarest Carson City Morgan Dollar after the 1889-CC. Finding this date in MS-65 condition or better is extremely hard. The two styles are the Large CC or the Large CC Over Small CC. This is because the Mint attempted to tool away the small CC in order for the large CC to be struck. The more common of the two is also the more popular one, the large CC. There were 756,000 coins struck and they range mostly from MS-60 worth close to $3,000 to MS-65 valued at about $30,000. There are only 2-4 known coins at the MS-66+ range which can sell for $60,000+.
