It only had a mintage of 3,200,000 coins and it is close to impossible to find coins in uncirculated conditions although AU and more circulated coins can be found pretty easily. The 1884-S Morgan was not struck very well and as result, high quality coins are very arduous to come by and are worth a ton. Easier Mint condition coins like the MS-60, MS-61, and MS-62 are around the $10,000 to $20,000 range, while 1884-S Morgans MS-65 to MS-68 are worth from $250,000 to over $600,000!

It was struck 9,730,000 times with the quality of strike varying greatly, from very weak with almost no details on some of the key points, to very strong. The 1884-O Morgan can valued at $30 or so in MS-60 grade and in the $12,000 to $13,000 range in MS-68. Two of the popular VAM varieties for the 1884-O Morgan are VAM-2, and VAM-6. VAM-2 describes the O mintmark that is round and the skinny slit.  This was the first year that a round mintmark was used which then replaced the ovalish mintmark used in previous years. VAM-6 is a mintmark that was repunched very strong a little bit higher and to the right of the original punch.

The coin is just ordinary, with good strikes and no stand out special VAM die varieties. One of the weird things about this dollar is that Uncirculated coins can actually be easier to find than more worn 1884-CC Silver Dollars. In MS-60, the 1884-CC Morgan can be worth around $200 or so, and then the coin is about $35,000 give or take a little at MS-68.

There are over 10 known varieties which have a small dash under the second 8 in the date. VAM-9, another popular variation, has a "Very Far Date",  and VAM-12 is another interesting coin where the motto "In God We Trust" is doubled. There were 14,070,000 regular circulation strike coins and only 875 proof coins struck. The 1884 Morgan can be worth around $30 to $40 as an MS-60, then close up to $25,000 as MS-68, in PF-60 near $14,000, and then a PF-68 is said to be valued at above $40,000.

With only 6,250,000 coins minted, there are also shortages of higher grade dollars as many of the ones found have lots of bag marks. This is great for the value of the coin, although not great for the collectors because an 1883-S in MS-60 is worth $500 to $600 and in MS-67, PCGS says that it can be valued at a whopping $200,000. This is amazing being that coin has really no particular die variations or even a super-low mintage.

The mass amount of them, being minted 8,725,000 coins, are of very different quality. One of the popular varieties of the 1883-O is VAM-4, which is a doubled mintmark. There are a few "branch mint proofs" of this dollar which means that the coin was made as a proof coin at a U.S. Mint that is not the Philadelphia Mint. These are pretty rare to find and can be worth a lot. A 1883-O Branch Mint Proof Morgan Dollar can be worth around $30,000 in MS-60 and then $150,000 as an MS-64 according to PCGS. The regular strike of the 1883-O can be worth around $30 as an MS-60 and about halfway between $4,000 and $5,000 in MS-67.

These coins are nicely struck with lots of luster. Although not desirable for collectors, the 1883-CC had quite a few VAM varieties, many of them having four distinct features:

1. A slanted CC mintmark.

2. A CC mintmark overprinted on another CC.

3. A doubled date.

4. A little dash/line under the second 8 of 1883.

These prices reflect the high mintage of 12,290,000 regular strike coins and 1,039 proof coins. Most of the dollars from this year and mint are good strikes, but there are some poorly struck coins in the many. There were no really special die varieties of the 1883 Morgan Dollar.

The 1882-S in MS-60 condition is worth around $40 and in MS-68 it's valued at around $10,000 give or take a few hundred dollars.

One of the most difficult Morgans to collect is the 1882-O/S. This die variety was minted only for a small portion of the 6,090,000 1882-O dollars that were minted. The VAM-7 is the only special variety minted of the 1882-O, however there are some more for the 1882-O/S. The 1882-O/S Morgan Silver Dollar has VAM-3,VAM-4, and VAM-5, all of which are variations of the O/S on the coin's reverse. The 1882-O/S dollar is extremely hard to find in higher grades, making it a desirable dollar to collect. The 1882-O in MS-60 is worth about $30 to $40 and in MS-68 it is worth close to $45,000. The 1882-O/S is worth anywhere from around $50 to $200 in MS-60 and then near the $25,000 price in MS-65 depending on how good of strike it is.
