1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint. All of the coins were minted with the Reverse of 1878. There are many die varieties, one to make mention of is the Long Nock, also known as the Long Arrow Shaft variety. This variety has a left tip of the arrow that is slightly longer than normal. You can find the coin usually struck very nicely. The mintage for the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar was 9,774,000. This coin is usually not of very high value being close to $40 as a MS-60, but there has been coins found at the higher grade MS-67 to MS-70 which can be worth up to $10,000.

1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1878-CC Morgan Dollar is one the few Morgan Dollars that were minted at Carson City. All of coins was produced with the Reverse of 1878 that had 7 Tail Feathers. Only 2,212,000 circulation strikes were made of this coin and there were no proofs made. This specific dollar has been said to be "one of the most consistently well struck of all Morgan dollars." There are many different die variations, four of which stand out: VAM-6, VAM-11, VAM-18, and VAM-24. Most of these have to do with the way the little CC looks on the reverse of the coin. In MS-60, this coin is about $250 while it can be worth $30,000+ as MS-67.

1878 7 Tail Feathers Reverse of 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1878 7 Tail Feathers Reverse of 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar was made after the 1878 7TF Reverse of 1878 Morgan Dollar. The difference between the reverse sides of the coins is that the 1878 reverse had a flat eagle breast and the arrow feathers were parallel. However, on the 1879 reverse, the eagle's breast is more rounded and the arrows are slightly spread apart. There was about 1.5 million coins struck as regular circulation strike coins and the it is unknown how many proofs were struck, anywhere from 25 to 300 were said to be made. The coin is valued at about $70 in MS-60 condition to $17,000+ as MS-66 and then, as a PF-64, this coin is valued at a whopping $160,000+ due to its rarity. There's no specialty die variations of the coin.

The 1878 7 Tail Feathers Reverse of 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar came after the 8TF Morgan Dollar and the 7/8TF Morgan Dollar. The reverse of the 1878 Morgan Dollar is when the eagle's breast is flat and the arrow feathers are parallel. About 7,850,000 dollars of regular strike were made of this type while only about 250 proof dollars were made. This Morgan can be worth from $80 in MS-60 to about $6,500 in MS-66, but a PF-67 can be valued at around $75,000. There are many die varieties, but none overly special.

1878 Doubled Tail Feathers Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1878 Doubled Tail Feathers Morgan Silver Dollar is the second type Morgan Dollar produced in the series. Another name for this dollar is the 1878 7 over 8 Tail Feathers Morgan Dollar. This is because when the standard tail feather amount was changed from eight to seven, the dollars with eight feathers were struck again using a mold with seven tail feathers. These dollars, like the 1878 8TF Morgan Dollars, were struck in Philadelphia. The 1878 7/8 Morgan Silver Dollar was not minted as a proof coin and only about 500,000 of them were produced. This coin goes from about $115 as a MS-60 up to $17,500 in MS-66. A popular variation of this coin is the VAM-44. The coin is referred to as the 1878 Doubled Tail Feathers "Tripled Blossoms" Morgan Dollar because the blossoms and leaves in the headdress are tripled.

1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan Silver Dollar



The 1878 8 Tail Feathers dollar is the first coin of the Morgan Dollar series. There were about 750,000 regular struck coins and 500 proof coins made in this year. The coin ranges in value from around $100 in MS-60 to $45,000 in MS-67 condition and then about $10,000 as PF-65. The coin has many different die varieties to it, including VAM-5, 9, 11, 15,and 17.

The 7 over 8 tail feathers variety is another. 9,774,000 were minted in San Francisco and 2,212,000 were minted in Carson City. Depending on the condition and the variety, these coins range from around $18 up to $45,000 according to PCGS.
